The Lamp

The Lamp

THE LAMP 🏮💡 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path ~ Psalm 119: 105 Inspired by the scripture above, The Lamp is an Altar Design Project for an existing Church. Charged with the task of redesigning the altar area, our team combed the scriptures for inspiration THE CONCEPT. The Lamp is a curvy, partly suspended steel structure with twelve (12) segments representing the twelve apostles of Christ. It comprises of two cones, an outer cone spanning 16 metres & an inner cone spanning 4.2 metres. Each segment is made of a lattice space frame 5 metres above the finished floor level, with the outer cone rising to a height of 4 metres & the inner cone a further 1.2 metres. All the steel members terminate at the cusp from which an antique chandelier drops, illuminating the Lord\'s Table (altar table) below. From the inside, the lampshade is infilled with extruded polystyrene with each segment designed to host a canvas of paintings similar to the Cistine Chapel. The exterior of the lamp is to be finished with grey-coloured composite panels in order not to draw attention. The altar walls are hierarchical in order, similar to the trinity doctrine of the Catholic Church. This is evident in the colour variations & massing (differing heights) of it\\\'s perimeter walls. On either side of the Lord\\\'s Table is a recess for holy grottoes with the Pieta on the left, St Joseph the Worker on the right & a molten crucifix hanging from the centre. The project is currently at the tendering stage. Signature of Design™
